I didn’t expect it to show up in my body.

I thought it was just stress.
Or burnout.
Or “one of those things” that comes from working too hard or not sleeping enough.

But it didn’t go away.

My body kept crashing.
My energy kept disappearing.
And no matter how many supplements or self-care rituals I tried, something inside me still felt off.

Eventually, I had to ask the deeper question: Could this be something I inherited … from my family?

The answer for our struggles often lies in our family system.

The Invisible Weight We Carry

We don’t just inherit eye color, facial features, and genetic markers.

We also inherit:

  • Unspoken grief,

  • Generational shame,

  • Anxiety that was never resolved,

And these entanglements eventually lead to suffering, in the mind, the emotions, and the body.

I didn’t find relief through one magic cure.

I began healing my family system.
I worked through:

  • The pain that lived in my ancestral line,

  • The losses, exclusions, and unspoken traumas that I had absorbed, 

  • The guilt I carried for living fully when others before me could not.

I always felt different. And not in a good way.

No matter what I did, it never felt like I belonged. 
I was too emotional. Too sensitive. Too opinionated. Too distant.
Too much and somehow, not enough.

There were moments of connection, yes.
But mostly, there was a feeling of being outside the circle, of being the one no one really understood.

And over time, I started to believe it: “Maybe something’s wrong with me.”

If you’ve ever felt like the outsider in your own family, you’re not alone.

What It Means to Be the Black Sheep

The “black sheep” of the family is the one who doesn’t fit.

What I didn’t realize for years was this:
I wasn’t just different.

  • A miscarriage, abortion, or early loss.

When someone in the family system is excluded, the system tries to bring balance.
And often, the one who feels like the “black sheep” is unconsciously carrying the weight of that exclusion.

They feel different … because they are.
They’re connected to someone else’s pain.
They’re holding a truth that no one else is willing to see.
And it’s not their fault.

As black sheep I may be unconsiously carrying the weight of our family excluded ancestors.

It wears you down.
It creates anxiety, depression, illness, or over-achievement.
It creates cycles of over-giving, withdrawing, or constant self-blame.

I lived this.
And it nearly broke me.

There is nothing wrong with the black sheep.
There is something wrong with the family system.

The first step was recognizing that this wasn’t about me being flawed.
It was about me carrying something that needed healing.

Our sense of self-worth is formed in the cradle of our earliest bond, the one we have with our mother. When this bond is nurturing, loving, and secure, we naturally grow up feeling that we are enough, just as we are. But when the relationship is cold, critical, or inconsistent, we learn a painful lesson, that we must earn love or prove we deserve it.

‘We must earn love or prove that we deserve it.’

This inner belief “I’m not enough” can follow us for a lifetime. It can show up as perfectionism, overworking, people-pleasing, or an inability to accept praise or success. No matter how much we achieve, that empty feeling of unworthiness remains.

Example: Liam always excelled academically and professionally, but inside, he constantly felt like a fraud. His mother, though well-meaning, often criticized him for small mistakes, never praising his efforts. In adulthood, he found himself endlessly seeking validation through work, yet never feeling good enough.

By acknowledging the root of his self-worth struggles, Liam began a journey of re-parenting himself, offering the unconditional love he longed for as a child.

Healing this hidden wound doesn’t mean blaming our mothers , it means seeing how the past shaped us, and choosing to become the loving parent we needed. When we do this inner work, self-worth flows naturally. We realize we are, and always were, worthy of love, success, and happiness.
